In Melodised Speech, Amy de la Bretèque offers an analysis of the oral traditions of the Yezidis of Armenia, including lamentations and epic narratives. She focuses on a specific mode of expression that is used by this community to evoke mourning, exile, and heroism. Combining ethnography, acoustic analysis, and linguistics, the author shows that this distinctive use of the voice enacts a social ideal in which the living remain connected to the absent and the deceased. The English language translation from French was funded by USIAS, fellowship 2025.
